Apple vs. Google: Introducing iOS 13 and Android 10
With the appearance of new iOS 13 and Android 10, the confrontation of Apple and Google became rougher. These OS have many common characteristics, but there are also quite important differences that are worth considering. iOS 13 vs. Android 10: Which is better?
Advantages of the new iOS 13
iOS 13 is the next-generation operating system for the iPhone and iPod touch, which was released on September 19. What's cool about iOS 13? Let's check the most significant features. Starting with this update, Apple has divided its operating systems. Now we have iOS for smartphones and iPadOS for tablets.
iOS 13 is available for iPhone 6s and later. In this update, Apple has "killed" two smartphones at once: iPhone 5s and 6. Also, the new system will work only on the seventh generation of iPod Touch.
Apple developers have changed the conditions of using the personal data of their customers. Now the system will warn you how often any program uses your location data in the background. Users will be able to use Face ID and create new accounts for services without exposing any personal information.
In addition, new Apple account login feature, which is now available for Facebook, Google, and other platforms, will protect your account and personal data from possible leaks or attacks. For example, if you do not want to provide your email to application developers, Apple will create an original random box for registration automatically.
Keyboard and input
Another new useful feature in iOS 13 is the QuickType option. It allows you to type words by sliding through the letters on the keyboard. A similar feature has already existed in Android systems for a long time, but now the function is available by default for Apple users. You can use QuickType on English, Chinese, Spanish, German, French, Italian, and Portuguese.
There's also an update on email writing. The new software allows you to change the text style, size, color, alignment, indentation, add numbered and bulleted lists.
Dark mode has become perhaps the most important innovation of the update. It not only reduces eye strain but also saves battery power on devices with a QLED display. Dark mode changes the entire appearance of the operating system, including notifications, Dock, backgrounds, and installed applications.
The appearance of the dark mode in iOS was predicted in the past and even the year before last. However, the long-awaited mode of the interface was implemented only by 2019. Nevertheless, the result of the developers' work looks quite decent and will surely appeal to many users.
Dark mode can be used as a basic theme for your device, or you can set a schedule so your iPhone will turn it automatically when needed.
The Photos application received a powerful update too. First of all, the application has a completely new tab, which allows you to view the library in a new format. There are four buttons on the tab: All Photos, Days, Months, and Years.
The new Photos tab will be a real breakthrough for owners of large collections of photographs. When viewing pictures by month and year, iOS 13 will highlight significant events and places in separate slide shows. At the same time, each slide show has its own name, for example, "Beach" or "Concert". Moreover, the iPhone can recognize the artist at the concert and add their name directly to the title of the album.
New photo editing. The image editor built into the Photos application has become much more advanced. The editor in iOS 13 received many tools for processing photos. You can change the warmth, shades of colors, sharpness, clarity, reduce noise, adjust shadows, and much more.
The standard application for working with files has been pumped up a lot: now you can either open or create Zip archives. Also now you can connect a USB flash drive, a hard disk or a memory card to an iPhone and work with the needed document right on your phone. The function had been expected for a very long time, and it greatly simplifies your life if you have to work with data.
2019 was a year for Apple to rethink and shift its focus from physical products to online services. At its first presentation in March this year, the company showed four new services, among which the Apple Arcade was also presented. Apple Arcade is an unlimited access service to dozens of games at a fixed price per month. In the first month, you can use the service for free.
On the last Apple Event, the company has also presented a long list of partners who work on games for Arcade. There are famous names as Konami, Sega, Capcom, Ubisoft, Gameloft, Lego.
No ads or in-app purchases. If you are a fan of playing games on your smartphone, you have probably come to terms with all kinds of in-app purchases and lots of advertising, especially if the game is free. However, Apple basically forbade developers to insert the ads into the games on Arcade.
Offline access. All games, whether they require the Internet connection or not, work without it. Another thing is cross-platform usage. All games available in Apple Arcade will work and look the same on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. You can start playing on one device and continue on another.
Advantages of the new Android 10
On September 3, Google released the final version of Android 10. Yes, now the title doesn't have any reference to sweets and desserts: just an ordinal number. The update is available for Pixel, Essential Phone, and Redmi K20 Pro smartphones.
Among other things, there are also new gesture control software, a dark mode, a screen recording function, and other changes that were added to the new Android smartphone software.
Focus mode and Dark mode
Google has added a new mode that can help you become more productive. It can be found in the settings, in the Digital Wellbeing tab. It allows you to block access to selected applications for a certain time to focus on work or games. The icons of selected applications can be discolored by adjusting the display in gray shades. If you apply this feature to Instagram, will you scroll less often? Google says, yes.
Apart from that, in Android 10, just like the new iOS 13, Google launches the dark mode. The button that activates it can be found in the notification center. It darkens all applications and interfaces.
If you use Gmail, you are probably familiar with Smart Reply. Essentially, the artificial intelligence learns what you are about to say, and offers three responses to the last message you received. Now with Android 10, Smart Reply is available for all messaging applications, including WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and others.
Google continues to improve its notification center, and you can also reply to an incoming message directly from the notification. By the way, in addition to text, the system will also offer some actions that may be associated with installed applications. For example, if your friend is waiting for you and writes to you about it, you can immediately build a route to the location on Google maps directly from the notification.
With the Live Caption feature, smartphones on Android 10 will be able to recognize text while you record or watch a video. Such videos will be relevant for Instagram stories. Many people watch them without sound, and now they can read everything that the blogger wanted to tell.
This is also useful for people who organize work meetings using their devices. You can arrange a conference, or take part in it, and read everything you or your colleagues say.
Android 10 can automatically activate the power saving mode, depending on the features of the device and user habits. The Android development team has partnered with DeepMind (which is owned by Alphabet) to improve the autonomy of Android smartphones using machine learning.
This development was called Adaptive Battery by Google, and it allows the system to prioritize applications, depending on how often the user launches them. If the program is rarely used, it will close after a while and stop consuming smartphone resources in the background. At the same time, applications that are used more often will have priority over background work. Google claims that such a system can increase the autonomy of smartphones by 30%.
It looks like Google can start a revolution in the gaming world. Google Stadia urges the users to leave the console aside and switch to the standard Chrome browser installed on any device.
A second ago, you launched Assassin's Creed on your smartphone, after a moment you crawl to the netbook, and then calmly display the picture on the TV. No extra wires and boxes, no "system requirements" and restrictions.
One of the important features of Stadia is that users get access to the game almost instantly. If you are tired of playing on a smartphone, you can jump to a laptop without losing your progress.
Android or iOS?
In the world of smartphones, Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile were forgotten, Blackberry OS 10 also died a couple of years ago, and other mobile operating systems are so small that they do not even make sense to take into account.
However, the confrontation between iOS and Android is very exciting. So which one is better? This question is hard to answer. But you can feel free to share your thoughts! Which side are you on? Let us know using the comments section.
